SAN DIEGO, CA – Haitian Bridge Alliance strongly condemns the Trump administration’s decision to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghanistan, a move that threatens over 9,500 Afghan nationals legally residing in the U.S. The decision, set to take effect July 14, 2025, comes despite ongoing repression and humanitarian crisis under Taliban rule.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem claimed conditions have improved in Afghanistan. Yet, reports from the United Nations and leading human rights groups reveal mass hunger, violent crackdowns, and near-total bans on education and employment for women. More than 23 million Afghans are in urgent need of aid.

Guerline Jozef, Executive Director of Haitian Bridge Alliance, Released the Following Statement:
“Afghans, like many others, fled extreme violence and instability following the Taliban’s return to power, which prompted the U.S. to grant TPS for Afghanistan in 2022. The decision to terminate this protection reflects a broader pattern of exclusion targeting Black, Muslim, and other marginalized immigrant communities—undermining the core principles of refugee and humanitarian policy. Meanwhile, the administration has granted refugee status to white South Afrikaners based on unverified claims of racial persecution—claims not supported by the United Nations or any reputable human rights body. This double standard not only ignores the documented realities on the ground but also risks worsening an already dire humanitarian crisis”

We urge Congress to act immediately to restore TPS for Afghanistan and to pass permanent protections for all vulnerable populations facing forced return.
