SAN DIEGO, CA —- The Haitian Bridge Alliance (HBA) strongly condemns the recent memorandum issued by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) directing U.S. attorneys to aggressively pursue denaturalization cases against certain naturalized citizens. This policy, which prioritizes the revocation of citizenship through civil proceedings rather than criminal convictions, represents a grave threat to the legal integrity of the naturalization process and fundamentally undermines the security of millions of Americans who have lawfully acquired their citizenship. According to the DOJ memo , prosecutors are encouraged to use broad and subjective standards of “good moral character” to initiate civil denaturalization proceedings, which do not require the same stringent evidentiary standards or provide the same procedural protections as criminal cases.

Executive Director of Haitian Bridge Alliance, Guerline Jozef, issued the following statement:

“This policy threatens to erode the legal community’s confidence in the stability and finality of citizenship, potentially transforming naturalized Americans into perpetual probationers rather than full members of the nation. As an organization deeply committed to upholding the principles of justice and due process, Haitian Bridge Alliance warns that this memorandum sets a dangerous precedent that could be weaponized against marginalized communities, particularly Black and brown immigrants, as part of broader exclusionary and xenophobic and racist agendas. It also raises serious concerns regarding equal protection, as discretionary enforcement opens the door to selective targeting based on race, nationality, or political affiliation.

HBA calls on the U.S. Congress to immediately investigate, hold a congressional hearing on this matter, and halt this reckless policy.
