Washington, D.C. – Monday, August 26, 2024, the Haitian Bridge Alliance is deeply troubled by the recent lawsuit filed by sixteen Republican-led states aiming to dismantle a federal program that could provide nearly half a million immigrants without legal status, who are married to U.S. citizens, a pathway to citizenship. Under the policy, which began accepting applications on Monday, undocumented spouses can apply for parole in place. This provides them with permission to stay in the U.S., apply for a green card, and eventually pursue a path to citizenship.

Guerline Jozef, Executive Director of Haitian Bridge Alliance released the following statement: “This federal program offers a crucial opportunity for undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens to regularize their status, enabling them to contribute more fully to their communities and live without the constant fear of separation. The program is a vital step toward rectifying the inequities faced by these families, who often live in the shadows despite their deep ties to the United States. This legal action is a direct assault on the integrity of immigrant families and the principles of fairness and compassion that our nation should uphold.”

The lawsuit, which seeks to end this pathway to citizenship, is a regressive move that will not only disrupt families but also undermine the values of unity and inclusion. The Haitian Bridge Alliance believes that every family, regardless of immigration status, deserves the chance to stay together and thrive. This legal challenge is an affront to the countless immigrant families who have built their lives in this country and continue to contribute to its success.

We strongly urge the courts to reject this lawsuit and uphold the program. We urge the courts to not entertain the political game being played by America First Legal during a U.S. presidential season. The Haitian Bridge Alliance remains committed to advocating for the rights of immigrant families and will continue to fight against any actions that threaten their stability and future. We call on all community members, elected officials at state local and federal level, allies, and advocates to stand with us in opposition to this harmful lawsuit.
