San Diego, CA — The Haitian Bridge Alliance extends its deepest condolences to the family, loved ones, and community of former Congresswoman Mia Love, who passed away from brain cancer on March 23, 2025. As the first known person of Haitian descent elected to the United States Congress, Congresswoman Love broke historic barriers and paved the way for future generations of Haitian-Americans to engage in public service at the highest levels.

Born Ludmya Bourdeau to Haitian immigrants, Congresswoman Love’s life embodied the values of resilience, service, and possibility. Her election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2014 as a Republican from Utah marked a turning point in Haitian-American political history and served as an inspiration to Haitian communities across the United States and around the world.

“We are heartbroken by the loss of a trailblazer whose presence in Congress sent a powerful message to Haitian-Americans everywhere—that our stories matter, our voices belong in the halls of power, and that we, too, can lead,” said Guerline Jozef, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Haitian Bridge Alliance. “We honor Congresswoman Love’s legacy as a pioneer and a symbol of what is possible.”

As an organization committed to uplifting and protecting the rights and dignity of Haitian immigrants, Haitian Bridge Alliance recognizes the importance of representation and visibility. Mia Love’s historic achievements continue to resonate with young Haitian-Americans pursuing careers in public service, advocacy, and beyond.

We join the Haitian-American community in honoring her legacy and offer our prayers and support to her family during this difficult time.

May she rest in peace!
