San Diego, CA –  Haitian Bridge Alliance unequivocally condemns President Donald Trump’s recent Executive Order signed on January 20, 2025, aimed at terminating birthright citizenship for certain children born in the United States. This action directly challenges the Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment, which has, since 1868, guaranteed U.S. citizenship to all individuals born on American soil, regardless of their parents’ immigration status.

The 14th Amendment explicitly states: ” All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” This foundational principle has been upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in United States v. Wong Kim Ark (1898), affirming that children born in the U.S. to foreign nationals are citizens by birthright. 

“President Trump’s executive order is not only a blatant violation of the Constitution but also an affront to the core values of equality and inclusivity that define our nation,” said Guerline Jozef, Executive Director of Haitian Bridge Alliance. “This attempt to unilaterally alter the Constitution undermines the rule of law and sets a dangerous precedent for executive overreach.”

Legal experts across the political spectrum have denounced the executive order as unconstitutional. In response to this executive action, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), along with several other pro-immigrant groups, has filed a lawsuit challenging its legality. Additionally, eighteen states have initiated legal proceedings against the administration, asserting that the order violates the 14th Amendment and the Immigration Naturalization Act (INA).

Haitian Bridge Alliance stands in solidarity with these efforts and will actively support legal challenges to this unconstitutional order. We urge Congress to reaffirm its commitment to upholding the Constitution and protecting the rights of all individuals born in the United States.

“Stripping citizenship from individuals born in this country is a direct attack on the fabric of our society,” added Guerline Jozef. “We must resist any attempts to erode the principles of justice and equality that are enshrined in our Constitution.”
