SAN DIEGO -The Haitian Bridge Alliance (HBA) commends the recent ruling by the United States Supreme Court ordering the federal government to facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran man who was wrongfully deported. This ruling is a critical affirmation of the rule of law and a clear rebuke of the executive branch’s failure to uphold due process in immigration enforcement.

Mr. Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident and lawful worker under a valid permit since 2019, was deported to El Salvador on March 15, 2025, despite a judicial order preventing his removal due to well-founded fears of persecution. While the administration later acknowledged the deportation was an “administrative error,” the U.S. Supreme Court found the error to be of such gravity that it ordered the government to facilitate his return.

This decision comes at a time when the Department of Justice (DOJ) has increasingly been politicized and weaponized to target immigrant communities and undermine constitutional protections. Under current administration, we are witnessing a disturbing pattern of using immigration enforcement as a political tool—often at the expense of human lives and legal norms. The wrongful deportation of Mr. Abrego Garcia exemplifies how such abuse of power erodes trust in the justice system and inflicts irreparable harm on vulnerable populations.

“The wrongful deportation of Mr. Abrego Garcia is not just a bureaucratic mistake—it is a human rights violation with life-or-death consequences,” said Guerline Jozef, Executive Director of Haitian Bridge Alliance. “This Supreme Court ruling is a necessary but insufficient response to a much deeper crisis: the weaponization of the Department of Justice and other federal agencies to terrorize immigrants and communities of color. We demand accountability, transparency, and an immigration system that upholds dignity and justice.”

Haitian Bridge Alliance calls on the administration to immediately comply with the Supreme Court’s directive, ensure Mr. Abrego Garcia’s safe return, and undertake a full review of deportation protocols to prevent further violations of due process. We further urge Congress to exercise its oversight authority and demand accountability from agencies engaging in politically motivated enforcement practices.

As an organization committed to the protection of human rights and the dignity of all migrants, Haitian Bridge Alliance stands in solidarity with Mr. Abrego Garcia and the countless others whose lives have been disrupted by this administration’s callous and unlawful actions.
