San Diego, California – On Friday, April 12, 2024, the Biden-Harris Administration announced the redesignation and extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ethiopia until December 2025. The redesignation allows eligible Ethiopian nationals residing in the United States as of April 11, 2024, to apply for TPS. The redesignation and extension also include a Special Student Relief notice.

The humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia, particularly centered around the conflict in the Tigray region, remains dire and continues to escalate. Since November 2020, the conflict has displaced over 2 million people internally, while more than 60,000 refugees have fled to neighboring Sudan. Reports of severe food shortages persist, with an estimated 5.2 million people requiring urgent food assistance in Tigray alone. Humanitarian access remains constrained due to ongoing violence and bureaucratic impediments, hindering the delivery of life-saving aid to those in need. The crisis has exacerbated an already fragile situation in Ethiopia, with broader implications for regional stability and security. Urgent international action is imperative to address this escalating humanitarian catastrophe and to ensure the protection and well-being of vulnerable populations caught in the midst of this conflict.

Guerline Jozef, the Executive Director of Haitian Bridge Alliance, released the following statement:

“I commend the administration for its recent redesignation and Extension of Ethiopia for TPS. We at the Haitian Bridge Alliance stand undeterred in our with and on behalf of Ethiopians and all Black Immigrants. I was overjoyed when M called me with excitement about the possibility to renew his employment authorization, support his family and give back to his adopted community, Anpil men, chay pa lou!”
