SAN DIEGO, CA — Haitian Bridge Alliance (HBA) today expressed its support for the Reimagining Safety Act, community-led legislation introduced by Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez to dismantle the Department of Homeland Security, abolish ICE and CBP, and establish a new Department of Community Safety.
HBA’s support comes as Haitian immigrants across the United States face heightened fear of persecution, racial profiling and uncertainty amid the Trump Administration’s immigration policies, including the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for more than 300k Haitian nationals and escalating detention and deportation efforts. HBA has warned that these policies are placing hundreds of thousands of Haitians and other immigrants at risk of detention, deportation, and family separation.
The Reimagining Safety Act is a first-of-its-kind bill that would protect people against DHS. It is the first time a community has designed a cabinet-level department. The Reimagining Safety Act would:
“The Haitian community is being terrorized, racially profiled and persecuted by an immigration enforcement system that has placed families in fear of detention, deportation, separation, and forced return to a country facing profound humanitarian and security challenges,” said Guerline Jozef, Executive Director of Haitian Bridge Alliance. “The Reimagining Safety Act offers an opportunity to fundamentally rethink a system that has caused enormous harm to immigrant communities. Safety cannot be achieved through fear. It must be grounded in dignity, due process, family unity, and the protection of human rights.”
Haitian Bridge Alliance commends Congresswoman Ramirez and the directly impacted communities that developed the legislation and supports efforts to place community safety, dignity, and human rights at the center of federal policy.
