HAITIAN BRIDGE ALLIANCE, AFL-CIO, AND OVER 300 CIVIL RIGHTS AND HUMAN RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS URGE PRESIDENT TRUMP TO PRESERVE TEMPORARY PROTECTED STATUS FOR HAITI

San Diego, CA — Today, Haitian Bridge Alliance (HBA), alongside labor unions, civil rights organizations, faith leaders, business voices, and community groups across the United States, sent a letter to President Donald J. Trump, Kristi Noem, United States Secretary of Homeland Security and, Marco Rubio, United States Secretary of State, urging the reversal of the decision to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals, which will take effect on February 3, 2026, despite significant gang violence, a humanitarian crisis, and instability on the island. This decision will impact more than 300k Haitians across the country.

The Trump administration’s decision comes as Haiti is experiencing record-level gang violence, mass displacement of more than one million people, and state collapse, conditions so severe that the U.S. government itself has designated Haiti a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” country. To simultaneously acknowledge that Haiti is too dangerous for Americans while forcing hundreds of thousands of Haitians to return is not policy — it is hypocrisy weaponized as governance.

Guerline Jozef, Executive Director of Haitian Bridge Alliance:
“Haitian TPS holders are nurses, construction workers, caregivers, hotel workers, and manufacturers. They keep hospitals open, rebuild cities after disasters, care for our elders, and pay billions in taxes. To strip them of status is to deliberately harm U.S. workers, sabotage the economy, and push families into fear and precarity.
Large-scale deportations and maritime interdictions cost taxpayers billions, drain DHS resources, and fuel instability across the Caribbean. TPS holders are already vetted, documented, and self-supporting. Ending TPS will force the federal government to spend more money to make the country less safe — while empowering gangs and human traffickers abroad.”

Liz Shuler, President of AFL-CIO:
“Under the Trump administration, we have seen the consequences of an immigration agenda built on fear instead of facts. This administration’s policies have pushed workers out of their jobs, destabilized families, and made communities less safe. Now, the administration is ending Temporary Protected Status for Haitians and escalating that harm —essentially firing more than 300,000 experienced, tax-paying workers who are essential to our economy, including our care, construction, hospitality, and manufacturing sectors. The AFL-CIO calls on the administration to extend and redesignate Haiti TPS, a common-sense step to protect workers, strengthen our economy, and avoid further destabilizing families and communities across the country,”

Haitian Bridge Alliance and signers of the letter call on the Trump administration to:

  • Immediately rescind the termination of TPS for Haiti
  • Redesignate and extend TPS beyond February 3, 2026
  • Conduct a transparent review of the economic, labor, security, and regional impacts of Haitian TPS

The Haitian Bridge Alliance and the AFL-CIO  along with organizations across the United States will continue to organize, litigate, and mobilize alongside impacted communities until TPS for Haitians is protected and expanded — and push for  immigration reform and  policies that are rooted in dignity, justice, and fairness.

Haitian Bridge Alliance advocates for fair and humane immigration policies and provides migrants and immigrants with humanitarian, legal, and social services, with a particular focus on Black people, the Haitian community, women and girls, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and survivors of torture and other human rights abuses.

About FWD.us: FWD.us is a policy organization working to advance better and more politically resilient solutions on criminal justice and immigration. For too long, our harmful criminal justice and immigration systems have held us back and been weaponized in ways that undermine our nation’s promise and democratic ideals. For over a decade, FWD.us has advanced criminal justice and immigration reforms that expanded freedom and opportunities to tens of millions of people in the United States. Working with partners in red, blue, and purple jurisdictions, we have secured legislative and judicial victories and executive actions despite often-challenging political conditions.
