San Diego, CA — Haitian Bridge Alliance (HBA) strongly condemns the Trump administration’s reckless and inhumane decision to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designations for Cameroon and Afghanistan. This defies all credible assessments of ongoing violence, displacement, and systemic instability in both countries and places thousands of lives at risk.

Cameroon continues to face widespread insecurity driven by armed conflict in the Anglophone regions, political repression, and violent extremism in the Far North. According to the United Nations, over 4 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, and nearly one million are internally displaced. The government’s persecution of activists, arbitrary detention, and military abuses make safe return impossible.

Afghanistan remains in the grip of economic collapse and severe human rights violations under Taliban rule. Women and girls have been stripped of basic rights, while targeted violence against former government workers, journalists, and minority groups persists. The U.N. estimates that 23.7 million Afghans are in need of humanitarian assistance.

“The decision to terminate TPS for Cameroon and Afghanistan is morally indefensible and legally questionable,” said Guerline Jozef, Executive Director of Haitian Bridge Alliance. “We have led the fight for TPS for Cameroon because returning people to a humanitarian crisis violates international law. This decision abandons our most basic humanitarian commitments.”

Haitian Bridge Alliance has been at the forefront of TPS advocacy for Cameroon, working in close collaboration with impacted communities, legal advocates, and congressional allies. We remind the administration that TPS is not a political tool but a life-saving humanitarian mechanism.
